Windows 7 Upgrade

You have probably heard about the exciting new operating system release from Microsoft -  Windows® 7 Professional.

Windows® 7 Professional is the successor to the much-maligned Windows Vista.  We at GizmoFish were not big fans of Vista.  However we do heartily endorse Windows® 7 Professional.  Firstly Windows XP is getting very long in the tooth and is fast becoming obsolete.  Secondly in Windows® 7 Professional Microsoft has kept all of the good things from Vista and improved or eliminated the things that made Vista unpopular with some users.  Our experiences with Windows® 7 Professional have been very positive, unlike with Vista.

Microsoft says Windows® 7 Professional "is designed to help your company meet today's challenges while allowing you the flexibility to prepare for tomorrow's. Built on the significant technical advances created for the Windows Vista® and Windows Server® 2008 operating systems, Windows 7 can help you enable your users be more productive everywhere, enhance security and control, and streamline the management of desktop environment."

Although this sounds like Marketing-speak we think it actually reflects the truth.  Windows® 7 Professional works great today but was obviously built with the future in mind.  64-bit technology, built-in virtualization , more robust yet less intrusive security, and better integration with the internet are just a few of the more forward-looking features Microsoft has added.

For those of you who have or are considering a server-based environment Windows® 7 Professional deftly leverages Windows Server® 2008 in several ways.  While certainly it is not required that you upgrade your server to Windows Server® 2008, there are distinct benefits to doing so that should make upgrading at least a consideration.  Windows Server® 2008 has its own enhancements including built-in virtualization that should make any server-based organization give it strong consideration regardless of when you plan to migrate to Windows® 7 Professional on the desktop.
